Biographical / Historical
The Search for Christian Maturity program was started by the Catholic Youth Organization in San Francisco in the 1960s. The program is a three-day retreat for young adults at least 15 years of age, designed to foster feelings of Christian community and to allow participants to explore their personal and spiritual growth. In 1966 the National Catholic Youth Organization adopted the program as its official retreat program, and in 1973 the Archdiocese of Newark's Catholic Youth Organization began to hold SEARCH weekends. By 1981, the program was popular enough to warrant the creation of a second program just for Union county. The SEARCH program continued through the 1990s in the Archdiocese of Newark.
