Scope and Contents

The Office of Reseach and Planning covers a great deal of material from 1975-1989. In general, the materials relate to the administrative workings of the ORP and to a variety of programs or projects run by the ORP. Projects include the Mt. Carmel Guild and the merger of Associated Catholic Charities, the office of the Secretariat, Archdiocesan hospitals, and others. Administrative files pertain to organization, planning, task forces, team ministry, financial statements, ethnic studies, and correspondence. Additonally, the files contain slides, film, and a cassette tape that refer to the mission statement of the Archdiocese of Newark.

Biographical / Historical

The Office of Research and Planning (ORP) defines Archdiocesan goals, develops and directs the overall short and long range plans and objectives of the Archdiocese, and develops programs to meet the needs of the Archdiocese. The ORP also enhances the use of Archdiocesan resources in accordance with the best fiscal policy and objectives of the Archdiocese. The Office was started in 1975 by Archbishop Peter L. Gerety with the essential mission of the initiation and maintanence of program oriented in planning and development systems which could enhance and maximize the resources and the utilization of those resouces with the Church in Newark. The first Director of the ORP was Monsignor Harrold A. Murray.

Abstract

The Office of Research and Planning for the Archdiocese of Newark initiates and maintains program-oriented planning and development to maximize the resources of the Church in Newark. The Office of Research and Planning of the Archdiocese of Newark records include materials related to the beginning of the ORP in 1975 and its activities through the 1970s and 1980s.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Materials were transferred to the Archives and Special Collections Center from the Archdiocese of Newark. Accession number 1992.1.
