Scope and Contents

The NJCHC records contain materials from the founding of the Commission to the present day. Reports, agendas and correspondence document the administrative functions of the commission. Also included are details regarding the work of the Commission, such as its Publications and oral history work. Included are items relating to The Bishops of Newark 1853-1978, The Diocesan Journal of Michael Corrigan and the Guide to Northern New Jersey Catholic Records.

Biographical / Historical

The New Jersey Catholic Historical Commission (NJCHC) is a specially appointed board sponsored by the Catholic Bishops of New Jersey and Seton Hall University with its administrative offices within the Archives & Special Collections Center. The NJCHC was founded in 1976, and until 2008 was known as the New Jersey Catholic Historical Records Commission. The objective of this Commission is to collect, preserve and publish works related to the New Jersey Catholic history experience. The first chairman of the Commission was Rev. John Dougherty, who was succeeded by Archbishop of Newark, Peter Leo Gerety. The founding executive director was Dr. Joseph Mahoney who served from 1976-2005.
