Austin family letters
Scope and Contents
The bulk of this collection consists of letters addressed to Louisa M. Austin, a mid-19th century resident of Perth Amboy, New Jersey and the state of New York. Most letters are postmarked from New York. Most early letters are written by Eliza Glover, the sister of Louisa M. Austin. Most chronologically late letters are from an A. Austin of New York, writing to his children, who appear to live with Louisa M. Austin in Perth Amboy. Other significant addressees include Hannah (H.L.) Woodruff, Louisa A. Austin, and a cousin Rebecca. Correspondence dates are 1835-1836, 1838, 1840-1843, and 1851-1854. The letters discuss family life, including illness, familial visits, and their social lives. There is some discussion by A. Austin in the later letters concerning inflation and the difficulty of finding a place to stay in New York.
The 1953 newsclipping relates the death of Lewis M. Johnson, originally of Perth Amboy, at age 74 in 1953. THe article mentions that Mr. Johnson had a brother, L. Austin Johnson, alive at that time.
