Biographical / Historical

The Planning Office of Seton Hall University was responsible for the organization of coordinated efforts to plan for the future of the university, including student enrollment, campus buildings and grounds, the organization and structure of university departments and offices, and special projects as needed. Originally a distinct office at the level of Vice-President, the Planning Office was transitioned to the supervision of the Provost of the University and became the Office of Institutional Research, also responsible for research and assessments efforts across the university, in the late 2000s.

By 1983, the position of Vice-President of Planning and Institutional Research reported to the President of the University, who reported to the Chancellor of the University. At that time, the Vice-President of Planning oversaw several departments, and the Director of the Computer Center, the Director, of Admissions, and the Director of Financial Aid all reported to that position.

In 1987, the position and title had changed slightly, so that the Associate Chancellor for Policy and Planning reported directly to the Chancellor and was responsible only for the Planning Office; the office of the Provost of the University had been created in the meantime, and other former responsibilities of the Vice-President for Planning were transferred to that office. The titles of the supervisor of the Planning Office change again slightly in the years following, and became Vice-Chancellor for Planning in 1993, then Vice-President for Planning in 1997.

During 2003-2004, institutional reorganization changed the Planning Office to the Office of Planning, Research, and Assessment, which became the Office of Finance, Planning, and Assessment in 2005. The office then reported to the Provost and Executive Vice-President for Academic Affairs. In 2008, this office was re-named the Office of Institutional Research.
