Biographical / Historical

The Office of the Vice-Chancellor for University Affairs is now called the Office of the Vice-President for University Advancement. Traditionally, this office oversees Alumni Relations, Public Relations and Marketing, and University Development, or all functions related to fund-raising, outreach, and community relations, and reports directly to the President or Chancellor of the University.

In 1983 the Office of the Vice-President for University Affairs reported to the Chancellor of the University, also working with the President of the University. At that time, the VP for University Affairs was responsible for the planning, coordination, organization, and operation of the University's fund-raising, grants and research, public relations, community relations, University relations, alumni activities, and intercollegiate sports. By 1987, the office and title had changed to the Office of the Vice-Chancellor for University Affairs, and was primarily responsible for alumni relations, publications and public relations, and University advancement; athletics and recreation moved permanently to the supervision of the Vice-Chancellor for Student Affairs. As of 1989, the VC for University Affairs was also in charge of the Capital Campaign, intended to raise $100,000,000 over five years.

In 1996 the office changed its title back to the Vice-President for University Affairs, and was officially responsbile for Alumni Relations, Development and Development Operations (the evolved functions of the capital campaign), Grants and Research Services, and Public Relations and Publications. Between 1996 and 1998, Grants and Research were moved under the supervision of the Provost's Office. In 2003 the office changed titles again, becoming the Office of the Vice-President for University Advancement. Since then the office has been responsible for Alumni and Government Relations, Advancement and Development, and Public Relations and Marketing.
