Scope and Contents
John J. Feeley papers, 1926-1985, contains personal and business correspondence from John J. Feeley’s time at Our Lady of the Valley Parish, St. Mary’s Church, Seton Hall University, and the United States Navy. Additionally, the collection includes financial statements and annual reports for both parishes, newspaper clippings, photographs, greeting cards, maps, military documents, sermons, and several copies of magazines such as Life magazine, Money magazine, and Ramparts magazine. Finally, the collection contains memorandums, Seton Hall University office memos, and papers regarding Feeley’s retirement.

Biographical / Historical
John J. Feeley was a priest of the Archdiocese of Newark who served as a chaplain in the U.S. Navy during World War II, taught religion and philosophy at Seton Hall University, and was a pastor of several parishes in the Archdiocese.
John J. Feeley was born on 13 January 1909 to John and Catherine Feeley in South Orange, N.J. He was ordained on 26 May 1934 at St. Patrick’s Church in Newark, N.J., was assigned to St. Teresa’s church in Summit, N.J., following ordination, then went to Seton Hall University in 1940 as a teacher of religion and philosophy. Msgr. Feeley divided his priestly life between teaching and pastoral work, with a three year stint as a Navy chaplain in World War II. He entered the U.S. Navy in 1942 and then returned to Seton Hall in 1945 to serve in several administrative posts. Msgr. Feeley was the pastor of St. Mary’s from 1966 through 1975, when he was named pastor emeritus. He died on 1 October 1987.
