Biographical / Historical

William J. Higginson was born in New York City in 1938. He joined the United States Air Force in the early 1960s, and during this time he studied Japanese at Yale and served two years in Japan. This experience led to his interest in haiku and renku poetry, and in 1968 he became one of the charter members of the Haiku Society of America. In 1975 he founded From Here Press in Paterson, New Jersey, which primarily published poetry chapbooks. Throughout his career he wrote many poems, as well as a number of nonfiction books. One of his books, The Haiku Handbook, is one of the most widely-read English-language haiku books.
